The holiday season is fast approaching and with it the season of last minute tablecloth crises. Between now and December 25, our store will get calls and visits from a steady stream of people who have a problem because:
a. Somebody forgot to pick up the tablecloth from the cleaners after last year’s festivities and now the cleaners can’t find it.
b. Somebody did pick up the tablecloth from the cleaners, but it is the wrong cloth, a fact not discovered until this morning when it was opened up for this weekend’s dinner.
c. There are two extra guests coming for dinner and the tablecloth won’t fit the table with the extra leaf pulled out.
d. The tablecloth is fine, but some of the napkins are missing or are stained beyond hope of future cleanliness.
In the earlier decades of the store, we sold a lot of table linens, including beautiful hand embroidered cloths from Madeira and heavy double damask Irish linens. Now the market has fallen way off for a couple of reasons. Most people are leading much more frantic and disjointed lives and don’t eat together as a family except on special occasions.
Also, the cost of producing these fine table linens has become sky high. So, if you have some fine table linens, whether given as a wedding gift, purchased years ago or handed down in your family, hold on to them, no matter how ratty and stained, as you will not see their like again.
Find out how to get those spots out in our next post.
