The Jacquard loom, or the Jacquard attachment to the standard drawloom, lead to giant strides in textile production. Fabrics produced with a Jacquard attachment can incorporate any or all of the the three basic weaves--plain, twill and satin--and their combinations, in one fabric. The intricate designs, coupled with multiple weaves and a variety of colored yarns, necessitated longer runs of fabric due to the time consuming process of setting up the loom. Textile designers also became increasing important because it was necessary to plan patterns and repeats which would best utilize the loom's ability. |
